Amazon is scheduled to launch the first non-prototype satellites for its Project Kuiper internet service into orbit on Wednesday night.
The launch, which will bring 27 Kuiper satellites into orbit, is scheduled to take place after 7 p.m. EST on Wednesday in Cape Canaveral, Fla., according to Amazon. Amazon is launching the satellites aboard a rocket from United Launch Alliance, which is jointly run by Boeing and Lockheed Martin. The company has planned additional launches through United Launch Alliance as well as Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and the French firm Arianespace, with the goal of getting more than 3,200 satellites into orbit. Amazon launched two test Kuiper satellites in 2023.
Amazon is aiming to build Kuiper into a viable competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink service and hopes to eventually sell satellite internet services to governments, companies and individuals around the world. The company has said it plans to offer its first commercial Kuiper service later in 2025.
